What is stress? What can you do to counter its negative effects. What can I do to help you.? At Island Escape Massage & Spa located in Navarre, Florida I work on many people who come in complaining that they are suffering from too much stress. I want to educate you on how to manage your stress.
We all have stress, it just doesn’t seem that we can avoid it. Some people think that stress is bad but that is not necessarily the case.
Stress is a natural physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset. Your body’s defenses automatically react in a manner known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction. Your body responds by preparing your body by releasing stress hormones, most notably adrenaline and cortisol. Your body reacts to these chemicals by making your heart beat faster thereby increasing your blood pressure and your breath quickens.. Long-term, this can wear your body down when it is constantly activated.
The relaxation response brings your system back into balance: deepening your breathing, reducing stress hormones, slowing down your heart rate and blood pressure, and relaxing your muscles. What can give you the relaxation response? Most people know deep breathing or exercises such as yoga. Did you know massage can have a definite effect on your stress level?
Massage can alleviate stress by calming your system down and relax muscles that were constricted in response to your stresses.
What else can you do to manage your stress? Try some of these suggestions to see how you feel. Put on some soothing music, Turn off all distractions such as cell phone or tv, Close your eyes; Take deep breaths- breathe in to a count of five, hold for a count of five, and exhale for a count of 5. Do these a few times during the day and see how much better you feel.
Did you ever notice how contagious laugher is? There are now double-blind studies that show how laughter evokes the relaxation response. I just read the other day how some one is starting laughter clubs, wouldn’t that be fun to start one. After your deep breathing session, think of something funny, or just start with a fake -ha ha laugh. You will be surprised at how much better you will feel.
